The city of New Rome faces a duel between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist committed to a utopian future, and greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was partially shelved due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001, after shooting 30 hours of second unit footage and hosting a roundtable reading featuring Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco and Kevin Spacey. The film was abandoned after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) “predicted” the attacks. Coppola completely abandoned the project in 2007 and only began redevelopment in 2019. At 21:40 the character Catiline says the sentence “Holy Jesus Christ!” » in amazement. In the universe, however, the city of New Rome comes from a culture based on Roman mythology (example: 54:47, the dedication to Vesta; 01:55:51, someone says “The Will of Kronos,” or at 01:56:49, a statue of Saturn is prominently displayed, while there are many more depictions of Roman deities. In this universe, Christianity does not exist. For Catilina, there is no reason to use the phrase “Holy Jesus Christ!” and in such a context. Cesar Catilina: *Will you* help me? Julia Cicero: Yes. And, well, I… well, I want to learn. Caesar Catilina: And you think that a year of… medical school gives you the right to delve into the riches of my Emersonian mind? Julia Cicero: Gives me the right? Caesar Catilina: Yes. Julia Cicero: [scoffs] Gives me the right? Caesar Catilina: Yes! Julia Cicero: Gives me the right? Caesar Catilina: YES! Julia Cicero: You have no idea what I am! Do you think I’m nothing, just a socialite? César Catilina: No, not nothing, but I reserve my time for people who can think. To science. And literature and… architecture and art. Do you find me cruel, selfish and insensitive? I am. I work without worrying about what happens to either of us. So go back to the club, take off your clothes and stalk the people you like. Julia Cicero: Very good! I will. Caesar Catiline: Come back when you have more time! Full disclosure: This movie is a disaster of epic proportions – a veritable train wreck that slips off the tracks, crashes, and then somehow bursts into flames. It’s so bad it’s almost great, the kind of so horrible it’s so great nightmare that future cult fans will rave about. And you know what? I respect Coppola enormously for that. This guy is a movie legend who decided to throw caution (and consequence) to the wind and become a mad scientist. It’s a glorious, unfiltered mess from the mind of a genius who clearly doesn’t care what other people think anymore. Bravo, magnificent fool! 👏🏻.
